Hesitation

Zugzwang means “a compulsion to move”. It is a term used in chess to describe a situation where the player is forced to make a move, but every available move is a disadvantage.

If it wasn’t an obligation, the player would prefer not to move at all.

I spent more time than I’ll admit, sitting on the floor, staring out this screen, waiting for TV programming to start at 4 o’clock

In Havre Montana in the 50s, we got only one TV channel and it didn’t start broadcasting until 4 PM. So us kids would sit on the floor and stare at this test pattern before programming started.
